Graduate Student

profile

Hi, I'm Rida! I am currently a graduate student studying nuclear engineering. I recently received my bachelor's degree after completing several internships at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Westinghouse Electric Company, and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. As a nuclear engineer, I enjoy working on ways to improve uncertainty quantification in nuclear reaction models.

Research Experience

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

High-Energy-Density Physics Intern | 06/2021 - 08/2021

Developed software to using modern computational approaches to improve uncertainty quantification of phenomenological optical-model potentials.

  • Integrated the compound nucleus contributions to the Koning-Delaroche Uncertainty Quantification (KDUQ) code within the Livermore optical model potential framework
  • Used LLNL’s high performance computing framework
  • Validated KDUQ implementation against established models and data sets

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Laser and Experimental Systems Engineering Intern | 06/2020 - 08/2020

Responsible for designing an experiment to characterize a pulse-dilation photomultiplier tube (PD-PMT) and developing methods to analyze experimental data. This improves the accuracy of fusion burn history data in inertial confinement fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility.

  • Devised various optical table orientations and assessed components and materials according to engineering requirements including beam intensity, beam diameter, and streak camera resolution
  • Wrote procedures document detailing experimental procedures, diagrams, and reproducible steps
  • Used Python libraries including pandas and SciPy to eliminate excess data and background measurements, applying signal processing and data analysis techniques
  • Implemented peak finding functions in python using calculus concepts
  • Developed techniques to separate merged signal peaks from PD-PMT calibration measurements

Nuclear Plant Reliability and Information Lab

Undergraduate Researcher | 06/2020 - 08/2020

Responsible for designing an experiment to characterize a pulse-dilation photomultiplier tube (PD-PMT) and developing methods to analyze experimental data. This improves the accuracy of fusion burn history data in inertial confinement fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility.

  • Developed unit tests in C++ and Microsoft Visual Studio
  • Became familiar with microprocessor architectures and instruction sets used in programmable logic controllers
  • Wrote documentation demonstrating the expected behavior of machine instructions
  • Used software engineering tools such as Git and CppUnit for version control & testing

Work Experience

Westinghouse Electric Company

Engineering Project Management Intern | 09/2020 - 12/2019

  • Responsible for implementing short-term projects at the largest uranium fuel fabrication facility in the U.S.
  • Developed more effective communications processes and procedures between project management and short-term project teams
  • Led spring 2021 outage planning meetings for all engineering, maintenance, and installation teams

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Student Engineer | 05/2019 - 08/2019

  • Assisted with plant inspections, drafted inspection reports, engaged in technical reviews
  • Audited previous inspection reports and developed strategic recommendations
  • Traveled to various nuclear power plants in the northeast to shadow resident inspectors

Leadership & Service

Rensselaer Union

Executive Board Member - Class of 2021 Representative | 04/2018 - 09/2020

  • Assisted in the allocation of the Union’s $8.9mm annual budget to over 200 clubs, 52 sports programs, and a 105,000 sq. ft. student union center and fitness facility
  • Mentored incoming board members in budgeting requirements and policies
  • Assisted multicultural clubs with fundraising activities and event planning

Pi Beta Phi

Philanthropy Committee Member | 11/2018 - 06/2020

  • Coordinated philanthropy events, including weekly tutoring trips to the local Boys & Girls Club
  • Assisted with fundraising events for Pi Beta Phi’s literacy programs

Women @ Rensselaer Mentor Program

Mentor | 09/2018 - 05/2019

  • Built a mentor relationship with a first-year engineering student
  • Advised on course registration, extracurricular groups, and professional development
